What is a chicken breed? People have lived alongside chickens for ages. All the chicken breeds we have now originally came from red junglefowl. In the beginning, breeders were all about eggs, meat, and feathers. But later on, we started caring about how chickens look, too.
Take Silkies, for example, with their fluffy looks, or Polish chickens that rock those fancy head crests. So, what makes a chicken breed a breed?
The simplest way to define a chicken breed is to say the chicks always look like their parents. Pair up two Orpingtons, and you can easily tell the chicks are Orpingtons, too.
These breeds are defined by standards that describe these traits, and poultry organizations play a key role in maintaining and updating these standards. However, there are many standards in use all over the world. For example, in the British Poultry Standards, the Poultry Club of Great Britain describes the Norfolk Grey, Scots Grey, Sulmtaler, and Vorwerk. However, the American Poultry Association (APA) does not recognize these breeds.
Almost all the breeds in the list come in different color varieties, like White, Mottled, Blue Laced, Barred, Mille-Fleur, etc. For example, the Wyandotte exists in more than 30 color varieties in The Netherlands. So, there are many more types of chickens and color patterns than breeds. In this list, we list the breeds and link to the chicken breed profile, where you can see all the color varieties.
Oftentimes, chicken breeds have alternate names in different countries or regions. For example, the Altsteirer is also known as the Styrian Hen, or the Naked Neck is the same as the Turken, or the Booted Bantam is the same as the Nederlandse Sabelpootkriel. Whenever different names exist for the same breed, we’ve grouped them together.
Outside of the standards, there are many indigenous chicken breeds, breeds on local markets, and commercial designer breeds. We’ve collected all of them. And even if we group the breeds by color and name, we still end up with approximately 500 chicken breeds.
